Urban Resources Initiative - Yale School of the Environment

Interactive Web Map on Carto

Yale’s Urban Resources Initiative is responsible for planting street trees in the city of New Haven. We created a new map for them that allows visitors to explore street trees by common name, diameter and zoom to a street address to learn more about the trees outside their home or office.

We worked with URI to clean and streamline their ArcGIS Online tree inventory data using OpenRefine. We then built an interactive web map on Carto which was customized to meet their needs. The web map was then transferred to their organizational account. We also provided a detailed step-by-step guide to building the map so they can modify it in the future. To help visitors use the map, we also created a fun user guide with example exercises that URI can turn into a blog post or a series of social media posts.
