Sabrina Szeto

Geospatial Consultant

I have an expertise in using geospatial data to address environmental and sustainable development challenges. My passion lies in helping organizations use GIS and earth observation data to fulfill their missions.

With a background in anthropology and forestry, I have a strong interest in understanding ecosystems and societies. I am a Google Developer Expert using the Google Earth Engine platform for large-scale spatial analyses through the cloud. I also am a co-founder of Women in Geospatial+, where I launched the LinkedIn page, and the mentorship and regional ambassadors programs.

I was the geospatial analyst at the Ucross High Plains Stewardship Initiative @ Yale School of the Environment from 2016 to 2019. There, I founded Earth Engine @ Yale, a weekly working group for Earth Engine users in Fall 2017. In my day-to-day work, I translated the power of geospatial technologies into applied solutions for organizations and landowners, while mentoring graduate students through applied research and client projects.

Previously, I worked at the Housing Development Fund in Stamford, CT on residential energy efficiency policy and finance. At HDF, I managed a residential energy efficiency stakeholder engagement process involving 60 stakeholders from public, private and civic sectors and implemented a $1.5M energy efficiency retrofit loan program for low-income households. I passed the Chartered Financial Analyst Level One exam in June 2014.

Teaching

Teaching is all about listening and communicating. Knowing what your audience is interested in and how to engage them is the secret to creating effective learning materials. Delivering the lesson in a memorable way is the icing on the cake.

Talks and Outreach

As a woman working in STEM and tech, my mission is to be a role model for young people who want to do the same. I speak at events and conferences about my work, seeking to connect curious minds to professional networks like Women+ in Geospatial.

Publications

I have written for a variety of audiences. My publications include a report for policymakers that was presented at state-level technical meetings, peer-reviewed journal articles, and a management plan for a forest land owner.
